2026 WILL Community Award

(Winiski Inspiring Learning & Leading)

Administered by the North Thompson Communities Foundation


Funding Amount: $2,850


Purpose: To empower a Barriere and area resident to gain new skills while directly contributing to the vitality of our community.


1. Award Overview
This one-time award is to support Barriere area residents who are committed to lifelong learning and community service. This award recognizes that personal advancement through education is most powerful when it is paired with a commitment to give back to the place we call home.


2. Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this award, the applicant must:

  • Residency: Be a current resident of the Barriere area (including McLure to Little Fort).

  • Educational Path: Be enrolled in, or have a letter of acceptance for, a certificate program, professional development course, or post-secondary schooling.

  • Commitment to Service: Demonstrate a clear plan to contribute volunteer hours toward a local project or a registered non-profit organization within Barriere.

3. The "Volunteer Pledge" Requirement
The core of this grant is the reciprocal commitment. Applicants must outline a "Community Impact Project" or a partnership with a local organization (e.g., NTCF, Food Bank, Seniors Center, or Youth Sports) where they will complete a minimum of 50 volunteer hours over the course of one year.


4. Application Requirements
Applicants are asked to provide a "Learn and Lead" proposal consisting of:

  1. The "Learn" Component: A personal statement (500 words) and description of the schooling or program and how it will enhance the applicant's skills or career path.

  2. The "Lead" Component: A specific plan detailing how the applicant will "pay it forward" in Barriere. This includes identifying the local organization or project they will support and the estimated timeline for their volunteer hours.

  3. Proof of Program: Evidence of the educational opportunity (tuition invoice, acceptance letter).

  4. Reference Letter: One letter from a community member or organization attesting to your character and commitment to the North Thompson Valley.

5. Selection Process
The selection process is a collaborative effort to ensure the spirit of the gift is met:

  • The Panel: Applications will be reviewed by a joint selection committee comprised of NTCF Board representatives and the Winiski family.

  • Focus: The panel will prioritize applicants who show a genuine passion for Barriere and a realistic, impactful volunteer plan.

6. Fund Administration

  • Management: The NTCF will hold the funds, issue the official award letter, and handle the tax receipting for the donors (if applicable).

  • Disbursement: $1,425 (50%) awarded upon proof of enrollment; the remaining $1,425 (50%) awarded upon completion of the volunteer hours and a brief "Impact Report." The award will be issued to a qualified donee (municipality or TNRD).

2026 Community Impact Grants

The North Thompson Communities Foundation (NTCF) Spring Community Impact Grants (officially known as the "Foundation Spring Grants") provide funding to local organizations working to benefit residents and communities throughout the North Thompson Valley from McLure to Blue River.

These grants are drawn from the foundation's Community Impact Fund, which is dedicated to supporting projects that enhance the quality of life in the region.

 

Grant Focus Areas

 

The NTCF Spring Grants support a wide range of community-focused initiatives, including, but not limited to:

  • Social Needs projects addressing food security and healthcare.

  • Economic Support Initiatives for training and development.

  • Arts & Culture Programs that include historical preservation and community events.

  • Recreation Initiatives for youth, families, seniors, and residents with disabilities.

 

Key Information

 

  • Eligibility: Funding is awarded to local charitable organizations.

  • Timeline: The spring granting cycle opens March 1st, 2026 and closes March 31st, 2026.

  • All applicants will be notified by May 1st, 2026.

2026 Youth Grants

Four $500 small project youth grants will be awarded this year.

The North Thompson Communities Foundation (NTCF) Youth Grants provide funding to local youth organizations working to benefit youth and communities throughout the North Thompson Valley from McLure to Blue River.

These grants are drawn from the foundation's Youth Fund, which is dedicated to supporting projects that enhance the quality of life for youth in the region.

 

Grant Focus Areas

 

The NTCF Youth Grants support a wide range of youth-focused initiatives, including, but not limited to:

  • Economic Support Initiatives for youth training and development.

  • Arts & Culture Programs that include historical preservation and community events.

  • Recreation, Educational and Environmental Initiatives for youth.

  • School teacher-led student projects.

 

Key Information

 

  • Eligibility: Funding is awarded to local charitable and non-profit organizations.

  • Timeline: The spring granting cycle opens April 1st, 2026 and closes April 30th, 2026.

  • All applicants will be notified by May 30th, 2026.

Environmental Grants

(No Granting for 2026)

Have you a project with an environmental focus? 

  • host a workshop with guest speakers focusing on climate change,
    conservation and sustainable living 

  • do a cleanup

  • beautify a public space with recyclable materials or bee friendly plants

  • promote alternatives to driving. Create bike and walking maps

  • promote water conservation and green energy

  • identify plants that thrive in our changing climate

  • build pollinator habitat

  • workshop on plant based meals, seasonal eating, how to source local ingredients

 

Applications are not open for 2026. One grant will be awarded to a teacher-led student project. $100 of the grant may be used as an honorarium and be used to support your group's own purposes

Bursaries

The North Thompson Communities Foundation (NTCF) Bursary Program provides financial assistance to students from the North Thompson Valley attending Barriere Secondary School, Clearwater Secondary School or home schooling and are pursuing higher education.

These bursaries are designed to help students cover costs associated with post-secondary studies, such as tuition, books, and housing.

 

Key Features of the Program

 

  • Funded by Community: The bursaries are made possible through donations from individuals, families, and organizations. A permanent Bursary Fund can be established with a minimum donation to create a lasting legacy.

  • Variety of Awards: The foundation manages different bursary funds, which may be named in memory of a loved one or designated to support students in specific fields (like trades) or from particular communities.

  • Past Bursaries: Examples of bursaries that have been awarded include:

    • The NTCF Bursary - awarded to one Barriere graduate and one Clearwater graduate

    • The Donnie Nicholson Memorial Trades Bursary

    • The Redman Family Memorial Bursary - awared to a Clearwater graduate

    • Nathan Nichol Memorial Bursary - awared to a Blue River student graduating from Blue River
